Optical
fibre specialist Fibercore
Limited is celebrating its 20th anniversary
with the construction of a new facility at Southampton Science Park.
The
company is currently split on two sites with the
administration side of the business at Southampton Science Park
and the production facility at the University of
Southampton, with R&D at both sites.
The
new facility will be completed towards the end of the year,
bringing the two sites together and creating space to
increase R&D and production capabilities, as well as
increasing the number of employees.
Founded
in 1982, as part of the York VSOP, Fibercore designs and
manufactures single mode optical fibres for special
applications.
Since
the company started, Fibercore has pioneered the
commercialisation of many of the key innovations in
speciality fibre technology, introducing polarisation
maintaining fibre in 1983 and rare-earth doped fibre in 1987
- illustrating its experience and expertise as the
world's longest established optical fibre manufacturer.
"The
new building will provide us with the space we need to
accommodate our R&D, production and admin facilities
under one roof," says Dr Chris Emslie, Managing Director
of Fibercore. "Uniting our facilities at Southampton Science Park
will allow us to increase our production capabilities
and enter our third decade delivering even better optical
fibres to our clients."
