Graduate Jobs Southampton is a SEEDA funded
collaboration between the University of Southampton
and Southampton Solent University to help retain
graduates in the Southampton region. It was
launched in April this year and by mid June, prior
to the end of the academic year at either
institution, five people had been employed through
the scheme.
John 'Sim' Walter from Southampton Solent
University, joined Southampton Science Park based iMeta Technologies on a year long work placement
through Graduate Jobs Southampton. During his
placement, Sim is part of a team of software
developers working on an online software solution
for the finance sector. He reports to the project
manager and is relishing the opportunity: "It is
still early days for me at iMeta Technologies, but I
can already tell it is going to be a great
experience for me here. I am learning a lot about
commercial software development and am really
pleased to be involved in more than debugging at
such an early stage of my professional life: I get
to be involved in the design and development of
modules as well as the project documentation. It is
great to have such a varied workload and each aspect
of my role provides me with different challenges. I
am really enjoying it and feel like a valued member
of the team."
Graduate Jobs Southampton allows SMEs in the
Southampton area to advertise vacancies for free on
their website. Nick Canfor, Operations Director at
iMeta Technologies says "We are one of the fastest
growing technology companies in the region so
recruitment of high quality staff, including
graduates and work placement students, is always a
priority. Graduate Jobs Southampton has proved to
be an ideal organisation to put us in touch with
graduates from the Southampton universities; we hope
to work with them for a long time to come."
iMeta Technologies are not the only Science Park
company to have made use of the scheme and, with
more than 100 alumni from the University of
Southampton alone employed on the Park, we can
anticipate many more companies at Southampton
Science Park finding people through Graduate Jobs
Southampton.
