Science Park News:
Unique Treble for Fibercore as The Duke of Kent Presents Queen’s Awards

Fibercore, the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of speciality optical fibres, was presented with two Queen’s Awards on November 8th 2007 by HRH The Duke of Kent KG at its Southampton Science Park facility. In conjunction with the Queen’s Award for Innovation received in 2004, Fibercore now has the distinction of becoming the first and only company to hold Queen’s Awards for Enterprise simultaneously in all three categories: International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development.

Becoming the first company to hold all three awards simultaneously is a huge honour for Fibercore as it is extremely difficult to qualify in one, let alone all three categories. Fibercore has managed to have strong focus on technological advances while managing to remain environmentally friendly, which is uncommon in the business world. Realising the impact that this holds for the optical fibre industry, Fibercore also held a seminar featuring four high profile speakers, from within the sector, the day following the presentation. This event held added value for those who came from overseas to attend the awards presentation.

A key to Fibercore’s success is its unchanged ethos of building strong and lasting customer partnerships: offering enhanced products and application support at every stage of a customer’s project, from the initial birth of an idea through to production roll-out, Fibercore’s technical support is available to all speciality fibre users. This exceptional customer focus has seen Fibercore become a key player in international trade with a 90% share of the global market for polarisation maintaining fibres for optical gyroscopes, and outstanding export success selling 98% of its output to more than 40 countries worldwide, including highly competitive markets such as the USA.

Fibercore’s Managing Director, Dr. Chris Emslie says that being awarded this unique treble of three Queen’s Awards concurrently will only fuel the company’s drive to excel in all aspects of its business operations. ‘We were thrilled to be welcoming HRH The Duke of Kent to our facility once again, to receive the two Queen’s Awards for International Trade and Sustainable Development and it was exciting to host a seminar which was able to highlight developments in the optical fibre industry. We realise that receiving all three Queen’s Awards is a huge honour and we will use this to drive our future operations. Fibercore is committed to developing world class products for our clients and will continue to do so in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible.’
