Conservation Work
Over 30 volunteers joined forces to spend a healthy day outdoors in the sunshine while carrying out light maintenance tasks in the Chilworth Conservation Area this June.
The Chilworth Conservation Area sits within the boundaries of Southampton Science Park. It is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation with a long history and a wide range of flora and fauna habitats covering 27 acres of ancient and secondary woodland and meadow. The area is a peaceful space for relaxation and walking, highly valued by Science Park companies, guests of the Chilworth Manor hotel and local residents.
The Science Park’s Letoya Baptista organised the day. She said, “Collectively, we achieved so much: clearing and chopping back undergrowth, tidying the pond area and the historic tree circle, painting the bridge and making bug houses to encourage bees and insects into the area.
“The day was a huge success, the weather held up beautifully, and everyone had a fantastic time! It was particularly lovely to see members of the public enjoying the space while we worked, many of whom thanked us for our efforts.”
Southampton Science Park thanks all who got involved and made the day as enjoyable as it was productive. This spring’s working team comprised representatives from Greenzest, Lambert Smith Hampton, Legacy, NIHR Global Health Research, Ravelin and Symetrica as well as students from the University of Southampton. Thanks are also extended to the staff at Chilworth Manor, who generously provided a delicious and welcome lunch.
