AI: Beyond the Hype

Dr. John Flackett was Robin Chave’s guest for his CEO breakfast in February. These regular informal gatherings give those who are leading businesses based at the Science Park an opportunity to network and explore synergies with their peers, and to learn from expert insights.

Dr Flackett is co-founder and head of AiLab, a global company with offices in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Since 2017, AiLab has helped industry, government, community and academia to be AI-ready, empowering organisations to develop skills and capability, and to build effective implementation AI strategies.

His presentation to Science Park resident leaders was entitled Beyond the Hype: What CEOs need to know about AI. Drawing on his more than 30 years of experience in AI since conducting pioneering research into it in the mid-1990s, he explored where AI is creating value, where risks are quietly emerging and why leadership clarity matters more than ever. He gave practical examples where AI is working well today, alongside the warnings about where value breaks down, emphasising the importance of leadership, strategic planning and critically, education.

Dr Flackett remarked, “Artificial intelligence is no longer a future consideration for businesses; it is reshaping how companies operate and make decisions. For today’s CEOs, the challenge is understanding where AI can genuinely create value, where it introduces new operational and reputational risks, and how to respond with confidence.”

Before leading a lively Q&A segment, Dr Flackett outlined the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, noting that the Central South region has much to celebrate around the technology - in particular, the AI Skills Partnership which is delivering training and broadening capabilities through a collaboration between AiLab, the Solent Growth Partnership, and others.

Robin Chave said, “Most of the businesses operating here at Southampton Science Park are embracing AI, as part of their products and solutions or for operational efficiencies, so John’s presence here today as a recognised leader in the field could not be more timely.

“On behalf of everyone who attended, I’d like to thank John for sharing his knowledge and insights, gained through decades of dedication to advancing the technology and educating on its use, with our community of technology business leaders. We all gained valuable perspectives into the role AI could play in future innovation and entrepreneurial pursuits”
