Catalyst Cohort 16 Commences
The founders of nine early-stage companies selected to comprise the 16th cohort of Southampton Science Park’s Catalyst business accelerator assembled for the first time on 29th September.
In a welcome session, led by Professor David Bream and Lucinda Lamont, the new cohort enthusiastically participated in ice breaker activities, were given a taste of what the programme has in store for them in the coming months, and were matched with the personal mentor that will be guiding them through it all.
From October through until February, participants will study a wide range of topics led by experts in their field and hear from entrepreneurs that have been where they are now. They’ll be covering how to: create a compelling value proposition and business plan, build and lead a team, protect and market the offering, raise finance and manage shareholders, negotiate and sell effectively, and more, culminating in a business review panel and showcase event.
David Bream inspired participants with a showcase of some Catalyst alumni businesses who have worked through this process and have gone on to achieve outstanding growth, including Symetrica, Utonomy, Primer Design, and Absolar. He said, “With Catalyst, we focus on the fundamentals and make no apology for that. In business, it’s easy to overcomplicate but really, it’s simple. Work out the value that you’re bringing to the market – how it is different, why people should be interested in your offering, and how you’re going to bring it to fruition. Ruthlessly focus on these elements and you will be successful.”
He also commented on the importance of dialogue. “In business, there is no ‘right answer’; a healthy, constructive debate is vital. The Catalyst peer to peer learning environment, where everyone is receptive to each other’s journeys and experiences, helps you to move forward, be ready to connect with the right people at the right stage, and prepare for challenges further down the line.”
The cohort will now come together at the Science Park for weekly peer group workshops and mentoring sessions while also benefiting from residence within the Incubation Centre.
