Spectrobots Reign Supreme!
After a false start was declared due to bad weather, the annual Science Park SOsocial sports day took place on a gloriously sunny day on 11 June. Organised by the Science Park for its resident community, nine teams of up to six employees battled it out to achieve PBs – or at the very least, to get to the finish line!
Letoya Baptista, who organised this year’s event commented, “Sports day was a huge success! It got people out from behind their desks, labs and workshops to take a breather, have some fun and meet some new people. The camaraderie was outstanding and it was particularly great to see MDs and CEOs discarding suits, throwing on trainers and getting thoroughly involved too! Thank you to everyone who got involved so enthusiastically!”
Teams Beamformers (Audioscenic), Team Crondall (Crondall Energy), Fallhammer 321 and Escape Lab Rats (Dekra), Labl.it, It’s Coming Ohm (OhmSpace), Shakespeare Martineau, Low Zenergi Warming (Zenergi), were all amazing and gave every event their best shot, but it was Spectrobots (Spectrum IT Recruitment) who topped the table and basked in glory at the end of the day.
“Thank you very much to you and the team for organising such a great sports day! It was really good fun and enjoyed by all,” said one participant. “Thanks again for sports day, it was good fun! We’ll be back next year!” said another.
The Science Park’s charity partner, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were in attendance; thankfully not attending to injuries, but to raise awareness of the amazing work that it does and to educate on vital life-saving CPR techniques. Their presence also created two new and unique track events for this year: a stretcher run, and a kit bag relay! It was delightful to see residents engaging with the HIOWAA team and indeed, making contributions to this charitable organisation: over £300 was donated on the day.
The charity’s Judith Stephens said, “We are delighted to be here at Southampton Science Park as its chosen charity for this year. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is a charity providing pre-hospital critical care for the most sick and injured patients across our county. We receive no government or NHS funding, so support from companies such as this is absolutely essential to the work that we provide. It currently costs about £17,500 a day to keep our service operational and saving lives across the county, so we can’t thank everyone enough for their support.”
